In March 2024, hearing aid battery packaging for zinc-air button cell or coin batteries was changed to comply with Reese’s Law. Our team at Gary D. Schwartzberg, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology is here to explain the changes in packaging and ensure you can still access your hearing aid batteries.
What’s Reese’s Law?
Reese’s law is named after Reese Hamsmith, a child who died after swallowing a button battery in 2020. It mandates stricter child-resistant packaging for zinc-air button cell or coin batteries, with the goal of preventing tragic accidents.
Differences in Packaging
Previously, these batteries came in a plastic wheel known as spin packaging. Per the new regulations, packaging is made of thick, tamper-resistant plastic that can be opened with scissors.
How To Open the New Packaging
Once you select a battery to remove, use sharp scissors to cut through the packaging on each side. Then, remove the cardboard backing and pop out the battery.
Avoid using box cutters or utility knives. Additionally, because these packages may be challenging to open on the go, it can be helpful to refresh your batteries before leaving the house or traveling.
