Hearing aids can change your life for the better by connecting you to a variety of sounds. Taking proper care of your devices helps them last longer and continue help you hear. Here are a few hearing aid care tips from Gary D. Schwartzberg, Au.D., Doctor of Audiology.
Clean Your Hearing Aids Regularly
Keeping your hearing aids clean makes it easier for them to perform optimally by preventing buildup of earwax, dust, dirt and other debris. Your audiologist can provide a hearing aid kit and teach you how to use it. Do not use water or wet cloths to clean your hearing aids.
Store Your Hearing Technology Properly
To avoid damage to your hearing aids, keep them in their case when they are not in your ears.
Handle with Care
If you have the option, stand on carpeted surfaces when you put them on or remove them so they land on a soft surface if they fall.
Additionally, you can minimize buildup of oils, sweat and dirt on your hearing aids by washing your hands before handling them. Since water can damage hearing technology, be sure to thoroughly dry your hands as well.
Keep Your Hearing Technology Dry
Water or moisture cause certain hearing aid components to malfunction or the battery to corrode. If your devices get wet, you can use a dehumidifier or dry box to dry them out or open the battery compartment and let it air out.
